Project Overview
Peltom Global Services (PGS) Limited is a major global health issue, and it’s especially concerning in Nigeria. Misuse of antibiotics in healthcare and agriculture, along with easy access to non-prescribed antibiotics, contributes to the problem.
Additionally, weak lab and tracking systems make it worse. This project aims to strengthen Nigeria's lab capacity to monitor AMR, in line with Nigeria's National Action Plan on AMR, which emphasizes better tracking, infection control, and regulation. Working with health institutions, private organizations, and other stakeholders, the project will help Nigeria improve health outcomes and maintain antibiotic effectiveness.
Project Goals
- Standardize Testing Guidelines: Review current procedures for antimicrobial testing and create national guidelines for identifying priority pathogens in AMR.
- Train Lab Workers: Provide in-depth training across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas to ensure lab workers are skilled in the latest AMR testing and standards.
- Start Environmental Monitoring: Set up a pilot system for environmental AMR monitoring, including data handling and reporting tailored to AMR.
- Provide Regular Support: Establish a system for regular visits to labs nationwide to ensure consistent use of AMR protocols.
- Educate Lab Staff on Handling Materials: Train lab staff in research and clinical settings on standardized handling and storage of AMR-related biological samples.
- Harmonize Guidelines: Update and align national guidelines on collecting and handling samples to improve data consistency and reliability.
- Share Updated Procedures Nationwide: Distribute the new guidelines to ensure uniform AMR tracking across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
